Are you or a loved one suffering from alcohol abuse?
Some of the most common symptoms of alcohol abuse to watch for are:
- Experiencing temporary blackouts or short-term memory loss
- Exhibiting signs of irritability and extreme mood swings
- Making excuses for drinking such as to relax, handle stress or feel normal
- Choosing to drink over other responsibilities and obligations
- Isolation from friends and family members
- Drinking alone or secretly
- Feeling hungover when not drinking
- Changing appearance and friends
Denial is a very common response to alcohol abuse. By refusing to recognize the negative consequences of alcohol, you’re preventing yourself from living a healthy, sober life. A simple tool to analyze the severity of your own drinking is a brief questionnaire called CAGE. If you answer YES to two or more of these questions, you should seek professional help.
The Four CAGE Screening Questions
Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get over a hangover?
